Baby Billy’s Oyster Shell
“There’ll Come a PayDay” The Righteous Gemstones season 3

The best outcomes happen through experimentation and collaboration. The designer, Christina Flannery, was so trusting with her vision - what started as a Liberace-inspired cape morphed into a sculpted, light-as air oyster shell that floats magically from the actor’s back, framing his torso in an iridescent halo that bobs and sways with the melody.

Initially, she thought he’d be wearing a cape, but, alas, a cape was not enough. It felt, to her, “too predictable,” even though she is aware that a cape is a pretty extra garment. She wanted something more out-there: “How can I make this weirder and weirder and weirder?” Flannery’s costume-department colleague Kelly Rose built the [oyster]shell, which “was a long process of trial and error, figuring out what is the best thing we could suspend into this backpiece that we made.” - Vulture

“I have to give a big shout-out to Kelly Rose, who brought this shell to life. [ . . .] I love this costume. It’s one of my favorite costumes I’ve ever designed in general, and it’s going to be hard to top this for myself.” - Christina Flannery, The Art of Costume
